A Proactive Approach to Improving Blood Product Safety in the Hospital Setting - On Demand

Subject Description

Bacterial contamination in blood products such as platelets and plasma present a significant infectious risk to patients receiving blood transfusions.  The emergence of new pathogens such as babesia, dengue, chikungunya, and zika also present additional risks.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the risk of bacterial contamination in platelets and discuss recently published case studies of transfusion transmitted infections.
  2. Describe the mechanisms of action and safety parameters of the available methods for psoralen treated also known as pathogen reduced platelets.
  3. Review the clinical, in vitro, and hemovigilance data for psoralen treatment or pathogen reduction process.
  4. Describe the current developmenets and current airms for the future patheogen reduction of red blood cells.
