Pathogen Reduction:
A Proactive Approach to Improving Blood Product Safety in the Hospital Setting - June 5, 2019

Subject Description

Safe donated blood is critical to improving certain patient outcomes. Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) persist despite interventions used to reduce risk. Bacterial contamination presents the most significant infectious risk, followed by the emergence of new pathogens such as dengue, chikungunya and zika.

While current screening tests have lowered the risks from transfusion transmitted infections, these tests are reactive, requiring identification of specific pathogens for which to develop and implement tests. This activity will outline how blood safety is changing and methodologies to identify and mitigate the risks associated with blood product transfusions, as well as considerations for implementing these new blood products in the hospital.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the mechanisms of action and safety parametersĀ  of the available methods for pathogen reduction for platelets and plasma.
  2. Review the clinical, in vitro, and hemovigilance data for pathogen reduction.
  3. Describe the current developments and clinical aims for the future pathogen reduction of red blood cells.
  4. Identify the implementation processes for using pathogen reduced blood products for patient transfusions.

Houston "Buddy" Nguyen is a Hospital Implementation Director at Cerus Corporation where he is focused on assiting hospitals with implementing INTERCEPT, or pathogen-reduced, products. Buddy is a medical technologist with degrees in Clinical Laboratory Science from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and in Information Technology. He has experience working in hospital clinical laboratories and spent more than 10 years in laboratory management before successfully implementing a Patient Blood Management (PBM) Program as a Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) at Northwest Texas Healthcare System for three years. He then moved on to Blood Systems Inc. (BSI) where he was a TSO and Quality Source Consultant. At BSI, Buddy was also a standing faculty member and co-developer of the Blood Systems Transfusion Safety Officer Training Program.
