Pathogen Reduction:
A Proactive Approach to Improving Blood Product Safety

Subject Description

Bacterial contamination in blood products such as platelets and plasma present a significant infectious risk to patients receiving blood transfusions. The emergence of new pathogens such as babesia, dengue, chikungunya and zika* viruses also present additional risks.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the mechanisms of action of the available methods for pathogen reduction for platelets and plasma.
  2. Discuss the safety parameters of the available methods for pathogen reduction for platelets and plasma.
  3. Review the clinical, in vitro, and hemovigilance data for pathogen reduction.
  4. Describe the current developments and clinical aims for the future pathogen reduction of red blood cells.

He has extensive industry related experience focused on educating surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and laboratory and blood bank professionals on topics such as blood safety, coagulation, goal directed transfusion strategies, and immunogenicity.
